Elisabeth Frink (1930 - 1993) was one of the leading sculptors working in Britain during the second half of the 20th century.

She was commissioned to make sculptures for numerous churches and cathedrals, including the Walking Madonna at Salisbury Cathedral, the Eagle Lectern in Coventry Cathedral and Risen Christ for Liverpool Cathedral.

Frinks depictions of Christ allowed her to explore ideas of masculinity, including aspects of strength, vulnerability, nobility and pain. The simplicity of this bronze head presents Christ as a universal figure and conveys a sense of humanity and relatability. His eyes are closed suggesting contemplation and serenity.

This sculpture was commissioned for All Saints' Church, Basingstoke in 1983 and cast in an edition of 6. A cast of this work was displayed during the artist's funeral and memorial service in 1993.

It is part of a large gift of sculptures, drawings and prints by Frink made to Pallant House Gallery in 2020 from the estate of her son Lin Jammet.

On loan from Pallant House Gallery, Chichester.
