This is a Heritage Open Day Walk

Stone shapes the character of many of our towns, villages and churches, yet the skill behind it is rarely seen. This walk explores the craft of stonemasonry and the people who continue a tradition that has shaped buildings for centuries.

Our route will take us through the local landscape before stopping halfway at the workshop of Will Davies, a working stonemason. Here we'll see how blocks of stone are marked and cut using tools and techniques that have changed surprisingly little over time. From shaping replacement pieces for historic buildings to carving decorative details, the craft requires patience, precision and a deep understanding of the material.

The visit will also reveal how much thought goes into even a single stone. Masons must understand geometry, structure and the way stone behaves under pressure - skills that medieval builders relied on when constructing cathedrals and churches that still stand today.

During the demonstration we'll learn about the different types of stone used locally, the tools of the trade, and how traditional knowledge is passed on to new generations of craftspeople. It's a rare opportunity to see a heritage skill up close and to appreciate the work hidden within the walls and monuments we often take for granted.
