"There is no virtue in rising from poverty, only the pity and waste of energy it involves." Charlie Chaplin
Born in 1899 into abject poverty in South London, Chaplin's first acting role was in the touring production of Sherlock Holmes in 1903 earning two pounds 10 shillings a week. 10 years later he signed a contract with Mack Sennett to star in a series of Keystone comedies at $125 a week. Within two years of arriving in Hollywood Chaplin was the most famous and highest paid film star in the world.
