Commemorating the Eightieth Anniversary of VE Day
The eightieth anniversary of the end of World War 2 in Europe in 1945 is being commemorated by the South Downs Poetry Festival at the Old Library, Knockhundred Row, Midhurst, GU29 9DQ. A special programme of poetry readings and music will take place on VE Day, Thursday, 8 May at 7.30pm, with free entrance.
Lord Egremont of Petworth House will deliver an address to mark to mark the occasion. Max Egremont is the author of several books related to the war, as well as being the biographer of Siegfried Sassoon and the editor of an anthology of war poetry entitled Some Desperate Glory. He will be commenting on how the poets reflected the events of the war and the historical significance of the fight against fascism.
Poets taking part include Stephanie Norgate, Jeremy Page (editor of Frogmore Papers), Joan Secombe, Hugh Dunkerley, Barry Smith, Naomi Foyle, Timothy Ades and James Simpson with music by Chris Hardy from Little Machine. Sculptor Vincent Gray, creator of the Keats statue in Chichester, will exhibit a full size sculpture entitled Resistance. The bells of Midhurst Church will ring at 6.30pm to commemorate VE Day.
