Gathering: Stories at the Turning of the Season

Four Sussex artists bring VAA OpenSpaces to Chichester for the first time.

From 5-15 November 2026, four Sussex artists will come together for Gathering: Stories at the Turning of the Season, an exhibition at The Old Bakery, Cloisters Kitchen & Garden, within the historic cloisters of Chichester Cathedral.

Part of the international VAA OpenSpaces 2026 initiative, the exhibition marks the first time an artist has brought the programme to Chichester, celebrating the diversity of local creativity and connecting the city's artistic community to a wider international audience.

Bringing together Louise Duggan, Warwick Wocco Johnson-Cadwell, Ben Cavanagh and Charlotte Loukes, the exhibition showcases four distinctive artistic practices, from expressive mixed-media painting and atmospheric landscapes to imaginative illustration and contemporary street art.

As autumn turns to winter, Gathering explores folklore, memory, seasonal change, light and darkness. Through their individual interpretations, the artists reflect on what it means to gather coming together, preserving memories, honouring traditions and finding connection as the seasons change.

Organised by Chichester-based artist Louise Duggan, founder of Chichester CAN, the exhibition also highlights the importance of creating opportunities for artists beyond traditional gallery spaces.

Gathering is about coming together and celebrating the incredible creativity and diversity we have here in Chichester. Being part of a global art trail is a wonderful opportunity to put our city on the map, showcase the richness of our local artistic community and share that creativity with a wider audience.
