THE COURSE
Two linked day schools aimed at the owners and guardians of historic homes, from Medieval to Edwardian. The days will cover:
History and change – interpreting the historic development of a house and its fixtures and fittings.
Materials and structure – what materials the house is built of; how was it put together; how the structure works.
Rules regulations and advice – listed buildings and conservation areas; the role of the Conservation and Planning Officers
Every day maintenance needs – what problems to look out for; what are the warning signs; do's and don'ts of simple maintenance; looking after the fixtures and fittings and the historic setting.
Limitations of DIY work – sources of advice and training; sourcing the right materials.
An examination of a selection of the Museum's historic buildings to look at these issues in context.
The themes will be illustrated where appropriate with case studies.
Day one topics
Understanding timber framed structures including the infill panels
Understanding roof structures
Roof coverings, including: thatch, tile, slate and lead.
Identifying problems of decay including damp and insect attack.
THE TUTOR
Kevin Stubbs is a Historic Buildings Consultant with a background of education, archaeology and building conservation. He was Director of Archaeology for the Test Valley in Hampshire, and later moved to the County Council to join the Historic Buildings Bureau, where he became the Principal Buildings Conservation Officer for the County. For eleven years he acted as the Director of a Conservation Centre and now runs his own Historic Building Consultancy and Training Company.
He advises on the repair and maintenance of all historic structures. He undertakes the historic analysis of buildings and provides training at all levels for the building conservation industry. This includes the development of historic building technology, traditional materials and hands-on craft training. Work for Local Government Authorities includes Conservation Area appraisals, historic building condition surveys and feasibility studies.
PARTICIPANT INFORMATION
Places will be limited to 15 participants
No special clothing or equipment is required, but please bring sturdy footwear and outdoor clothing for the tour around the Museum.
FEE
£80 per person per day, to include tuition, teas, coffees and a light lunch.
