Smugglers in West Sussex
Organised by : Dementia Support
A captivating look at the county's notorious smuggling history, with historian Chris Hare. During the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, smuggling was widespread throughout Sussex, extending far beyond the coastline into inland communities where contraband was stored and distributed. As a thriving port situated close to secluded beaches favoured by smugglers, including Climping, Arundel became an important centre for the trade. This talk reveals the harsh realities behind smuggling and examines how desperate economic circumstances drove many local people to break the law, challenging the romantic myths often associated with the era.
