Qigong is an ancient Chinese mindbody practice used to build and improve physical aptitude, resilience, mental clarity, self-awareness and longevity. Based on the concept of cultivating Chi or Qi, Qigong has long been used as an highly effective approach for the management of stress, pain and disease. The term Chi or Qi, is untranslatable and is knowable only through direct experience; it is often defined in the West as vitality or life force. Gong can be translated as skill cultivated through sustained work/effort.

Despite being largely misrepresented as gentle exercise for the elderly and infirm, when practiced properly, Qigong is a highly effective system of conditioning that profoundly improves the practitioners physical and mental wellbeing and performance. Many ancient martial artists used Qigong to fuel and sustain their training well into old age and minimise wear and tear on the body.

During this workshop we will learn and practice the three essentials of Qigong: i) opening exercises to mobilise the joints and release blockages in the soft tissue, fascia and channels, ii) standing practice to build Qi, fortify skeletal alignment, develop correct breathing and whole-body cohesion, iii) a selection of classic Qigong movements.

If the weather is fine training will take place outside in the private courtyard at the rear of Cowdray Hall. Fee: £60
