New exhibition celebrates the makers, skills and industries of Chichester District
A new exhibition celebrating the people, skills and industries that have shaped Chichester District has opened at The Novium Museum.
Made in Chichester District explores how people in the area have made, crafted and manufactured goods throughout history from prehistoric flint tools created for survival to the large-scale modern manufacture of goods to sell both locally and nationally.
The free exhibition brings together objects and stories from The Novium Museum's collection so visitors can learn more about making in Chichester District.
The exhibition highlights how skills have evolved over time, documenting traditional techniques such as leather tanning and brickmaking, with leather wares from Westgate Tannery and a miniature brick handmade in Chidham among the objects on display. It also points to the continued importance of local makers, craftspeople and manufacturers in supporting the local economy, preserving traditional techniques and offering alternatives to mass-produced items.
To reflect the breadth of the subject, the museum plans to refresh objects on display during the exhibitions run, to celebrate as many local artists, craftspeople, makers and manufacturers as possible. Visitors will also be invited to share their own memories, knowledge and personal connections to making in the district.
Made in Chichester District is the latest exhibition to open in The Novium Museums first-floor foyer gallery, following recent exhibitions Every Step of the Way and Out and Proud in Chichester. The gallery provides dedicated space for smaller-scale displays and projects co-curated with the community.
Councillor John Cross, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Place at Chichester District Council, says: We're so fortunate to live in an area with such a long history of making and innovation, and this exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the people who have helped shape the local area through what they create. I hope people will enjoy discovering the creators' stories and feel inspired to share their own knowledge and memories to help build a richer record of the districts heritage for the future.
