The Prebendal School in Chichester has appointed Chris Gunn as its new Deputy Head of Boarding, with a vision to build on the schools established provision, develop flexible boarding opportunities and strengthen the sense of family that lies at the heart of school life.

Chris brings extensive experience in education and school leadership, having worked at Tavistock and Summerhill School, Greenway Academy and Stomping Abbotts, where he was Head. Passionate about developing the whole child, he believes education should extend beyond academic achievement, giving children opportunities to explore new interests, discover their talents and develop the confidence and life skills to thrive.

Prebendals nurturing ethos, strong sense of community and rich heritage made it a natural choice for Chris, who has long aspired to lead a boarding provision.

Chris said: I have always believed education should extend far beyond academic results. Boarding offers a unique opportunity to nurture children, inspire their curiosity and encourage them to try new things, helping them become confident, well-rounded individuals.

What struck me most about Prebendal was how genuinely it lives its commitment to knowing every child. I want boarding to feel like an extension of home, providing the care, security and encouragement children need to flourish.

Chris plans to further enrich the experience for full and flexible boarders, exploring opportunities such as practical life skills, cookery, creative activities and partnerships with local organisations. These experiences will help children discover new interests, build confidence and develop skills that will serve them beyond the classroom.

A key priority will be raising awareness of Prebendals flexible boarding options, which extend beyond the chorister community. By offering families greater flexibility, the school aims to help more children benefit from its welcoming boarding environment, with its nurturing care, established routines and opportunities for friendship and independence. Parents remain closely involved in school life, including attending sporting fixtures and performances.

Looking ahead, Chris said: I cant wait to get started, get to know the children and their families, and become part of the schools busy calendar of concerts, drama, sport and musical performances. My ambition is for every child to feel safe, celebrated and at home, while discovering passions that could shape their future.

Headteacher Alison Napier said: Chris brings an exceptional combination of educational leadership and a genuine passion for helping children thrive. His commitment to nurturing the whole child makes him a natural addition to the Prebendal family. We look forward to seeing him build on our strong foundations, further enhancing our boarding provision and widening the opportunities available to families.

The Prebendal School educates children from nursery to Year 8, offering a broad education encompassing academic learning, music, sport and the creative arts.
