A city centre enhancement project will be receiving £600,000 investment from Chichester District Council following approval by councillors.

At their meeting on Tuesday 19 May councillors agreed to make funds from reserves available for the project which is being led by West Sussex County Council.

As part of the £10.52 million public realm project, WSCC will carry out a variety of improvements to East Street and North Street, including replacing the worn-out pedestrian surface with new long-lasting materials which will also be in keeping with the historic surroundings.

In addition, the project will include installing new seating, fresh planting schemes to help green the city centre and help create a more attractive and welcoming environment for residents, workers and visitors. Signage will also be improved to help people navigate the area more easily and learn more about the areas heritage.

Councillor John Cross, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Place at Chichester District Council, says: We know that enhancing a city centre with new signage, seating and planting can really help revitalise an area which is why we were keen to contribute to the county councils project.

We know that the condition of the pavements is regularly raised as an issue of concern by both residents and visitors. One of our council priorities is to encourage a thriving economy and help foster healthy, vibrant communities and improving the city centre is central to both these objectives. As a project partner, Chichester District Council has helped provide input into the design, while the Chichester Vision Group provided feedback on the design, and district councillors have been regularly updated on the schemes progress and development.

We have also been working on the Chichester Vision and Regeneration Strategy and improving the look and feel of the city centre is reflected in both these key projects.
