A new book by Anne Scicluna and David Wilson

Have you ever wondered how the street you live in got its name?  If you have, here is the answer to your questions, as the new book telling the origin of the street names of Chichester and the surrounding villages is now out.  Anne Scicluna and David Wilson have updated their previous book, as there are a considerable number of new streets which have been built in the past five years, including the Graylingwell estate and that of Minerva Heights.  Added to this are the neighbouring villages of Lavant, Donnington, Fishbourne, Oving and Westhampnett, which were not included in previous editions.

Originally got together in 1996 by historian Ken Green, who was the prime originator of the Chichester Local History Society, there have been several updates since, this being the latest.

In getting the book together, David undertook considerable internet research and took most of the photographs, while Anne who had been involved in helping to name many of the Chichester streets did personal research by asking questions of local people, telephoning friends and acquaintances both near and far, and looking up in various reference books.  The result is a little book which you will enjoy picking through and checking the origin of each name.

To obtain your copy, the cost of which is £10, you can get it from the Novium Museum and from the City Council offices in North Street.  Other outlets to follow.
